As the education to women was not considered essential in the last century, Maharshi Karve in Maharashtra pioneered Hingane Stree Shikshan Sanstha in Pune and Savirtribai Phule started school for girls. Following this initiative many girls only schools were established in various cities in Maharashta state. Womens education societys further extended the education to girls at college level.
This was appropriate and essential during the period before freedom. As awareness to education increased as most of the women got school level education, they entered in the service sector and started working in all fields with men.
Even I was tempted to start mahilavishwa.com website only for women. But I have realized that the environment has changed and has become socially inclusive for men and women, boys and girls.
Schools and Colleges which admitted both girls and boys has become a more acceptable and necessary arrangement in the present scenario. Learning together does not now create security issues. Girls should know to work with boys. Keeping girls restricted and separate, does not allow girls to know how boys behave and naturally are afraid to mix with boys in society.
Parents also choose mixed schools for girls to give education as they wish to make their kids bold and socially responsible.
I feel therefore that the girls and womens education societies should slowly adopt mixed education.
This will match with education patterns followed in all developed countries. The countries restricting education rights to girls are governed by old religious dogmas and we should not keep on the same trend in India.
This my opinion. I wish to get comments and suggestions for such change in education system.
