Dr. B. Subba Rao - My Business Guru

Dr. B. Subba Rao, my guide for M. E. and leader of our consultancy group in Walchand College, is the main inspiration for me to change my temperament from teacher to businessman. I have worked for a long time with him acting as an obedient assistant and following every word he had uttered and instructions he has given. The days of consultancy and research in environmental engineering, I have spent with him, have become a precious memorable treasure of information and advice to me in my post retirement career.

While pondering over the reasons of success he has achieved in consultancy, I have realised his many qualities, which helped him to rise so fast to a national level. He was friendly to everybody, always ready to help, developed a strong friendship with Prof. Santpur and Jogalekar who were master minds in administration and management.

He  learned Marathi fast, wrote answers to letters immediately after receipt, very pleasant and assuring conversation while talking on phone. He  made friendship with students and used to go to their hostel rooms and meet them. He also visited many industries, studied their problems assured managing directors and chairman of industries for assisting them in solution.

He started  Post Graduate Research facility under Shivaji University and worked for development of college in true sense by establishing linkages with industry and political leaders. He started annual consultancy plan for industries through  Walchand College to provide continuous service and trouble shooting which was the need of industries. After giving 50% share of consultancy to college, he always divided staff remuneration equally between three of us ie Dr. Subba Rao, myself and Prof. J. M. Gadgil. The students were also given to and fro expenses and lodging facilities in the industries for monitoring work.

He applied to many research grants from state and central government agencies and built the environmental engineering laboratory to become the best laboratory in the state. He established cordial contacts with pollution control board officials from Maharashtra, Karnataka and Central boards. HE used to call many experts from IITs and field to give lectures in the college.

Under his leadership, we conducted many training programmes for treatment plant operators and even management staff. We purchased a mobile van to facilitate travel of our student team for monitoring.

He had good relations with city public health dept and we conducted some research projects with well known doctors in preventive medicine.

He travelled extensively in India and abroad, got consutancy assignments fro UP, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and we had unique experience to visit industries there.

We also published many research papers, conducted seminars and  public awareness campaigns for pollution control.

As our work expanded, he thought of establishing separate organisation to establish laboratory and outside staff only for research and development. Thus came the idea of Environmental Protection Research Foundation. Prof. M. V. Jogalekar, Dr. Vijaykumar Shah, Dr. Vora, Shri. Rajabhau Shirgaonkar, Chief Minister Shri. Vasantraodada Patil, nearby industries and many individual members raised good capital to build the laboratory.

Now our work started at two places. Through college during college timings and from EPRf during weekly holidays, morning and evening upto late hours in night.

Unfortunately, I was struck with brain tumour and could not work with him since 1990. My interest in IT also diverted my attention from Environment to IT. Never-the- less we were associated with EPRF through weekly meetings and helped him in his projects.

Dr. Subbarao became principal in  1996 and he could not concentrate on the work as he had to manage civil dept also. Hence he took retirement in 1999 and started full time work in consutancy.  He also suffered a setback due to heart problem, he changed his lifestyle and recivered fast.
He established Water & Wastewater Research Centre in his house in Pune and started testing and consultancy. Later he closed it as it was difficult to manage at both places. You can see his entire profile here

After visiting many countries on study tour for learning advance techniques in Wastewater technology, he thought that such development can be possible only if we establish some practical training based learning system. He started International Environmental Management Studies as a research organisation. We prepared syllabi for online courses studying various international university course contents. He visited USA and Canada for getting first hand knowledge from universities there. We started a separate web portal enviroschool.org as a joint venture for giving online training. However, we could not proceed much,as we three were busy in diverse activities and could not concentrate on this task.

In absence of our availability ( Myself was busy in Dnyandeep and Prof. Gadgil was pursuing his work in religios studies), he took the  entire responsibility of managing the consultancy and keep it running. Fortunately his daughter-in-law Mrs. Nagajyoti, who was chemical engineer got post graduate degree in Env. Engg. and managed the environmental laboratory successfully. His son Sharat handled field visits and overall management. He had great expectations from me and Prof. Gadgil and he often used to tell friends in meetings that he wants to see that we two become leaders of the field in future. However, we could not meet to his expectations and changed our tracks. This discouraged him. But he continued to struggle on his own to keep the activities running.

He could get desired recognition to laboratory by NABET,. He arranged many field experts from various fields to become area or field expetts as per the statutary requirements of scrutiny committee. He kept a high standard of service to industries and was not happy with the way his own students were handling consultancy activities in hotch pothch manner. He tried to remain always away from such consultants. However, he always welcomed us for participation in his projects.

Since that day, I find him always at the office desk in his laboratory at 10 am in the morning. He attends to calls, writes letters, does frequent visits to industries and keeps the wheels moving. He is very methodical in his working style. He is always busy, thinks of his business, his client's needs and welfare of subordinate staff. Dr. Suhsa Khambe, owner of Nikhil Lab. or Shri. Sunil Bhate Environmental Consultant were trained by him to become independent entrepreneurs.

My decision to  start Environmental Consultancy through Dnyandeep Infotech was mainly prompted due to his example and confidence he had created in me to do consultancy in the changed environment.

I have been in IT business for 20 years, but could not establish my company  even to  level of sustainability. I have to learn a lot from Dr. B. Subba Rao, regarding resilience and flexibility in approach, taking tactful decisions, efficient management of subordinates, financial accountability and satisfaction of clients.

I have decided to work with him and fulfill his dream of buiding International   Indian firm for education research and consultation in Environmental Engineering. Fortunately for me Dr. N. S. Raman, Retd. Dy. Director from NEERI, Nagpur has joined Dnyandeep Infotech as director and has the same vision like me. Dr. Subba Rao has not yet given consent or Go Ahead signal, but I hope that we can come to some business understanding.

I am sure all students of Dr. B. Subba Rao and Walchand College of Engineering can help us in this endevor.
