Physics of Perception

( Some stray thoughts about event perception that gets stored in our memory as experience)

Perception of any event  is affected by

A.      Sensation

  1.  Light – depends on eyesight

  2.  Sound – Variation in pitch and volume
  3.  Smell – Odour, freshness  or staleness in air
  4.  Taste
  5.  Skin contact

B.      Effect of gravity and motion – Change in compression of body parts due to sitting, standing or sleeping position. While standing there is increase in compression of body from top to bottom whereas while sleeping there is minimal compression and large contact area leading to uniform pressure over the body parts. Now consider a case where a man has got no perception about body orientation from five senses mentioned above. Still due to gravity effect leading to pattern of body compression, the person shall be able to decide his body orientation.

C.      Knowledge of past events

Consider a case of drama. Suppose all setting, lighting and makeup is perfect. The story, situation and personal role and interaction between other actors is different, still the actor retains true perception that he is acting in a drama due to knowledge of history or past events.

D.      Nature of reaction from a body and mind to external stimulate. This depends on the state of body and mind and their healthiness. If body is not in order, it can lessen or distort sense perceptions. Prejudice may distort the impact of external stimuli on mind.

E.       Individuality – This would vary from person to person and would depend on his nature of reacting to external stimuli.

Any change in surround that we observe is reaction of mind due to effects of all the above mentioned factors.

Suppose at any instant, we come to understand that we are travelling in a train following factors determine our total perception.

A. Sensation –

1. Eye sight – We see that train is moving with respect to surrounding area with us

2. Sound adds to our knowledge. A continuous sound of wheels, whisle, engine, rhydum of crossing rails,  change in speed indicated by change in pattern

3. Smell – Fresh air, smoke etc

4. Taste – No contribution

5. Body contact – Wind, change in temperature and dust

B. Gravity and vibration will determine motion frequency  of body

C. Knowledge of past events . We know that we have to go from station A to B and we have started our journey from station A

D  and E will contribute to the comfort or monotony  as the case may be affecting perception of travelling experience. Presence of other passengers and interaction with them will add other perceptions to basic perception of traveling.

If we are at station and train is not moving, still we may feel that train is moving if there is train moving on nearby track.
Suppose we are standing on river bridge and looking to moving river water below, an apparent motion to our body is perceived by our mind. Here the eyes are following the moving water but as two parts of water cannot be separated and coming water is constantly replacing the water that is going, our eyesight slips and we assume water to be stationary. and the relative movement  causes perception of  the motion of our body.

Similar is the effect when we see wooden chip floating in a lake with waves  propagating in one direction. Wooden chip is stationary but moving up and down due to wave but we can't follow wave properly and perceive that the wooden chip is traveling with wave.

Thus the  perception of event can be analyzed  as composition of above factors
