Dream Mechanism and Analysis

Dream Mechanism

My blog on Chemistry of Dream explained my ideas about the memory management and dream synthesis based on chemical reactions in brain. After writing the blog, I became cautious about my dreams and tried to recall them and analyze to find clues to the past experience.  I found that very small portion of dream and that also in small flashes of memory could be recalled even though  dream experience was continuous.

Why such a loss of major sequences of memory bits after awakening. I feel that the dream event sequences have very weak linking bonds. It is interesting to note that rise in temperature increases activity of chemical reactions. During the process of awakening blood circulation and temperature of that memory region might be increasing leading to disruption of many bonds. The consciousness when enabled might be consolidating intact sequences  into permanent memory  by strengthening those bonds.

The bonds between various long chain organic compounds  are due to linking of positive and negatively charged groups of two different molecules. Hydrogen bond is weakest bond which is mainly responsible for structural specificity in enzymes and similar compounds.  Electro kinetic forces and pH also govern the combination or splitting of covalent bonds.Electro kinetic potential also called as sreaming potential also enables the compounds to move and change orientation in electromagnetic field and

Dream Analysis

Today  early morning, when I got up, I remembered a dream episode wherein I had discussion with office clerk in post who after knowing about my civil engineering profession asked about use of bulldozer. I asked why he wants to know. He told that his son lives in a old slum colony in  Pune and he wanted to advise the owner to scrap it and build new building.

Immediately images of a bulldozer demolishing the house appeared before my eyes. I wondered how come a bulldozer word  came in conversation before its image got displayed. Was the word cause of fetching image of bulldozer from previous memory storage.  In fact, just a day before the dream, I had seen bulldozer scraping road surface hence, it might be still in easily accessible memory region. There were many TV appearances of slums and news stories with pictures of slum houses and insanitary conditions which might be in stored in my permanent memory. When I visualized the scene of huge bulldozer dismantling a old building, a question arose in my consciousness about how it could  reach the spot as all that area is surrounded by small houses and have very narrow roads. This startled my thought and I woke up.

If we analyze the sequence of dream, we come across many vital points. First images are indentified by verbal names like bulldozer, house, slum. There is more probability of inclusion of recent perceptions in dream. Non availability of approach road  creates  contradiction to accepted  law. Such contradiction raises alert level of consciousness causing transformation of subconscious state to fully conscious state. If the  same conversation would have occurred in real life, problem of accessibility would have prevented appearance of dismantling scene to appear in flash memory.

It may be concluded that subconscious state might be  trying to interpret sequences without applying logical reasoning filter and as such lacks intelligence.

I appeal to readers to do introspection of their dreams and bring out important clues to throw light on possible  mechanism and kinetics of dream.

Role of school education on growth of intelligence

School education  is the most important period in the life of a person. The age group represents rapid changes in the physiology of body including brain size. This might be causing simultaneous  increase in memory capacity of brain to its maximum. There is intense vigor to learn  providing best opportunity and ability to build intelligence.

Present formal education system has a focus on  teaching  or so called `spoon feeding’ and seems  appropriate at this age group as self learning ability is not developed. The system engages the student in learning activity for  major time of the day during this period.

This  helps in understanding physical and social environment and  introduces basic laws of science and cause-effect relationships developed by human knowledge. Study of languages, history, geography, science and mathematics develop the tools for building knowledge base. Examination also is based to test memory retention and naturally, memorization of  subject content helps in automating fast response to questions without intervention of intelligence.

However, mind is inquisitive and starts comparing new knowledge with the stored rules of scientific reasoning . Grasping of any new knowledge now does not remain a simple process but child uses acquired new tools to examine its concurrence with stored information.

Child asks many weird questions which baffle grownups.  What is gravity? Why we can’t fall down when earth rotates? How the plant grows? What is fire? And so on… Generally, elders don’t take trouble to explain the things and many a times even they do not know answers to many questions and try to pacify the child by implanting concept of god, who can do anything as he is the creator of universe. But the answer does not satisfy the child as it soon realizes that it is contrary to cause-effect theory. How one cause can be origin of many diverse effects?

One common remedy used is to nurture belief in all events whose reasons cannot be explored.  But religion goes one step further. It advises that we should pray the almighty god for satisfaction of our wishes and devotion can raise capability of our consciousness to  super-natural power and enable us to understand and change the universe. Devotion needs repetition of actions in the form of rituals which engage mind in emotional pleasure. This works well if students  have built their memory through memorization.  One biggest disadvantage of belief is that it thwarts the growth of intelligence and emotion becomes the sole guide of future actions.

But the students who are encouraged to find answers by further study or experimentation resist the acceptance of facts as acts of god and   struggle to discover cause of effects. This mental struggle builds intelligence which attains power to control natural emotions.

Generally, the human behavior is greatly influenced by emotion rather than intelligence. But control of emotion by intelligence is necessary for proper and ethical  personal behaviour.

Growth of intelligence in child

With the birth of child, consciousness is only limited to emotions representing basic inherent memory. As the child grows, it learns to correlate various events in stored memory to decide the course of action for giving response  to perceptions. This can be termed as intelligence.  Child tries to copy behavior of elders to get recognition and praise. It also stores all observations in nature.  Initially it does not differentiate between living and nonliving. Hence likes toys and assigns  consciousness to them.

My son in childhood had drawn a picture of morning sunrise scene. It was something like picture shown. He had drawn his face in the picture and believed that he should be in the picture to see it. After some thought I found some meaning in his belief. Truly, painting of any scene depends on the viewers   perception of it.

My grandson had drawn a picture of elephant washing car with water spray. My grand daughter had drawn picture of fish with mobiles. This shows how children relate their observations and give innovative solutions.

Children get pleasure in repeating the actions which employ acquired intelligence. My grandson when learned to open the lock with key was so fascinated by the result that he roamed from door to door with a key in hand to open the lock. We often notice the interest taken by children in playing with toys and interacting with them .  They take pleasure in repetition of these actions any number of times.

One child learning alphabets saw the pictures of Elephent and Rabit on picture chart. It stored the images in its memory. But thought both these animals to be of similar size. When it saw the elephant in zoo, it could not believe its eyes. Actual observation corrected error in his comprehension about the size.

You can add many such observations and remember events which throw light on the process of intelligence growth in child.  It is necessary to compile all such data to formulate general guidelines for teaching the children. Practice of memorization  by reciting number of times does help in creating lasting memory sequence but does not add to the intelligence in real sense, though it provides ready answers to established questions. With the present examination system relying on objective tests, memorization is a sure way of getting success. But to face a real life problem or to answer tricky verbal questions, it does not help.

Children do not differentiate the people based on age or gender.  Once while playing with my grand daughter  I asked her  to dance .  After her dance, she said, now I will see and you dance.

Many a times elder people try to explain the things  to children using logic of cause effect relationship, but the children fail to  understand  because they lack necessary  intelligence to grasp the facts. However, if we explain the things considering their limited scope of experience and wrap the  facts into objects of their familiar world and give importance to their ego thing become easy.

We elder people do  tune our personality with the hero or heroine in the  novels and movies.  That is somewhat difficult for children. Hence when I tell stories to children, I invariably make that child a hero of the story.  Then the child likes the story.

Evolution of consciousness

Human being  has high level of consciousness with complexity of emotions and  well developed intelligence which are not observed in animals and lower living species.

Animals also   have accumulated memory which influences their behavior. They can remember routes, behaviors of other animals and changes in nature. Domesticated animals show higher learning abilities due to constant more frequent exposure to human beings and try to learn or imitate human actions.

Birds could be trained to remember expected actions. Their skill in nest construction shows presence of inherited memory.

The insects like ants and bees show highly developed social working and discipline in actions. They anticipate food shortage in future and store food in advance.

Single cell microbes show change in behavior with changes in physical and chemical environment.
Plants respond to change in weather and season and can detect water and other chemicals and even though these responses can be explained based on purely physico-chemical reactions, still we can label it as some different kind of memory.

All the above categories we classify as living as they have an important ability of reproduction, but still we generally do not attribute consciousness to plants. But suppose we use the term consciousness as response to external environment, we can extend the realm of consciousness to lowest possible level.

Why plants, even the non living organic compounds show miraculous synthesis and transformation patterns. You know that virus behaves like nonliving matter but becomes active when attached to specific host cell. Virus exhibits a peculiar replication pattern resembling reproduction of living species.

The structure and activities of DNA and RNA exhibit presence of some sort of low level consciousness.

Minerals interact with environment and change structure. Crystals grow in shape typical to specific compound. Synthesis of molecules from atoms  and chemical reactions like corrosion and electron movements in magnetic fields is response to environment.

If we liberalize the definition of consciousness this way, we can say that there is  a  connection between living and nonliving and both are part of a continuous evolution in a time sequence right from energy to highly developed human being at the apex.

Cleaning of glass windows of high rise buildings

Multistoried high rise buildings have glass cladding surfaces which renders high architectural beauty to these buildings. However such glass surfaces get soiled due to dust and need regular cleaning by soap water or some effective cleaning solutions. If the cleaning is not done, the appearance spoils the view.

Various methods are used for cleaning such glass windows.

1. Use of Ladders
Ladders ranging in size from a single step to the extent (and beyond) of local regulations are used to access windows for cleaning purposes. These can be used only for short heights.

2. Using Scaffolding Supports
These are temporary work platforms typically erected from a lower level to gain access at height.

3. Aerial Work Platforms
Machines variously configured and powered, designed to deliver workers to otherwise inaccessible areas.

4. Suspended Platform or Cradle
Devices designed for ascent and/or descent via wire rope by mechanical or manual means.

Cleaning of such windows is difficult and risky and involves huge maintenance cost.Risks include slipping on water or soap, and falling from heights. Window cleaning is considered to be the most dangerous job. Several window cleaners die each year, and many are injured.

Development of effective, economical and safe method for window cleaning is necessary. To find the solution, we can explore the cause of difficulty. It is revealed that there is a major flaw in construction of such buildings which give more importance to appearance rather than maintainability.

There is no provision  of local anchors on these glass walls or windows and the joining frames also are too smooth to provide any means for local supports to scaffolding structures.

It is possible to provide strong hidden anchors  in the form of stainless steel hooks or any appropriate method at all glass joints or holding frames at the time of construction only. Small secure temporary scaffolds can be fixed at any level by supporting them with  these anchors.

Suitable climbing mechanisms also can be erected using these anchors.

This would eliminate use of risky ladders or ropes or costly crane services. Even if it slightly affects architectural beauty, it can be made compulsory to avoid accidents and loss of life. This would also reduce the cost of maintenance considerably.

Birth of consciousness in new born child

When the child is born, the brain contains memory of body operations like breathing, opening and closing of mouth, movement of arms and use of senses. Moreover there  may be large portion of inherited memory from parents which provides some specific characteristics embedded in the chromosomes which determine patterns for memory interpretation and compiling.

When the child is exposed to outside environment, it starts receiving memory inputs from various senses. The crying of baby is only response to the sudden shock of exposure to environment. We can assume that the experience is zero and consciousness is at minimal level. This event can be termed as birth of consciousness.

As the memory from sensory inputs goes on accumulating, the child learns to respond to the external stimuli.

Initially the consciousness might be containing only emotions exhibiting basic animal memory like hunger and  fear necessary for survival, but soon learns to use accumulated memory for modifying response.

Consciousness grows rapidly and child understands that its response is affecting  behavior of people nearby. Child observes and recognizes the people  through sound and slowly learns to get response by seeing to  eyes of other person.

Consciousness builds self esteem and the child exhibits selfish motive. Intelligence is born when child learns  to change behavior for favorable response from nearby people. Successful behaviors are stored for repetition and child starts choosing and managing the behaviors for getting what it wants and we conclude that child has become intelligent.

We give name to child and repeat it every time we talk to stress importance of name on its mind. By talking to  child we help it to nurture good responses and slowly child learns to exhibit its own identity.

Role of Prejudice on Perception

If we assume that stored memory has physical existence then we can also attribute it living status. Thus we can define experience as a living entity which grows with input of perceptions during consciousness and even during dream. Yes, we can recall dream events and they form part of our experience.

I had compared perception with snapshot in video. It is not correct. There is no  way for blind to comprehend what is visual impression. Still he has experience which builds with other senses. However, if blindness has come by  accident or disease, the person can construct visual images in mind based on earlier visual experience.

Prejudice is preformed opinion about any event, object or behavior of external world. This is the main modifier while converting perception into experience. We can even imagine that perception is a food for living experience entity which slowly transforms its body. The prejudice helps to guide body and mind response. In it also behavior patterns are developed which are used frequently to reduce energy requirement.

I had read  a book `Games people play’ in which it was shown that how persons find comfort in responding preformed behaviours like gestures, verbal expressions or physical movement.

As prejudice is built on accumulated memory, it is difficult to prepare him for accepting contradictory evidence.  Hence the importance of building character intentionally right from childhood.

Divotees  gather and strengthen memories of their religious idols in the form of images, stories and develop a strong belief. Their dreams help them in strengthening belief.  Even the normal chance events get  interpreted as evidence of miracle. This belief in self defense refutes any contradictory logic, statements or event news. This is the reason why divotees remain unconvinced even if confronted with glaring contradictory evidence.

Human mind is the combined effect of emotion and intelligence. Emotion is the result of prejudice and intelligence is result of reasoning power. Religion boosts emotion whereas science promotes reasoning. Eastern philosophy tried to develop reasoning in believing in divine power. Western philosophy tried to find scientific laws in nature and applied to human behavior.

If you are new to  philosophy subject, please read `Story of philosophy’ by Will Durant.   If you are religious minded, I would suggest that you read two books by Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishan vig. ` The present crises of faith’ and `Recovery of faith’ which will give you enough material to fight materialists. On the other hand, if you are skeptical, read  ` The nature of physical world’ by Arthur Eddincton, ` Enquiry into human understanding’ by David Hume and ` being and Nothingness’ by Sartre.

I myself,  during my prime, was staunch opponent of belief in religion and was taking interest in arguments. However, with maturity, I found that there is no point in convincing inconceivable and it is more logical to accept and  respect others point of view because after all it is their life and they are happy with their beliefs.

Relation between Perception and Memory

When I wrote blogs on Physics of Perception and Chemistry of Dream, I was trying to prove that the creation of experience in dream is only false combination of previous perceptions stored in memory. But question remained about the nature of perception memory and how it builds experience  memory with time dimension.

To my mind the perception is instantaneous impression like snapshot image with sensory links to each and every component in that snapshot. Movie camera stores number of screenshots on time scale and each screenshot contains two dimensional arrays of bytes, density depending on resolution.  This requires large memory storage which gets multiplied by frame rate and time duration of video.

If we assume that human perception is similar to snapshot, the memory storage getting stored would be enormous during person’s lifetime, which simply cannot be quantified on material scale. Storage and retention of such memory in living brain where majority of portion of brain  is busy in managing body processes seems unlikely. There must be superb compression of such snapshots of perceptions during its storage as experience memory.

During my morning  walk on my favorite track, I tried to visualize the route of my travel and whether it is matching with our map concept. I was surprised to find that two dimensional track route map  is not stored in my memory. And I cannot grasp the entire map as we see on paper. I could only glance to various snapshots of scenes in my mind and infer change in direction or slope. I concluded that map is a derived thing from snapshots which are essentially in a linear sequence on timeline.

Further introspection revealed that I am not storing each snapshot as a whole, but only recording the changes in its look. Like change of scale due to movement or some glaring changes in picture or presence of some new objects. If I try to recall all my memories of my everyday walks, I get few snapshots of different places along the route and that also only after my intentional effort of recalling it. Thus all experience of my morning walks is bundled in a small memory package of few snapshots and change events.

Now consider our experience of our usual daily work like mouthwash, tea, bath, lunch, play or normal day to day discussions with relatives and friends. We find that lot of such experience is in symbolized form occupying small memory. Reading or viewing television is not of this type as there is new action and events.  But the repeated advertisements on TV also may not be getting stored separately except recording of time.

There is one important difference in video snapshots and snapshots of perceptions. Each video snapshot  is independent and does not have links to its inner portions. However, snapshot of perception is having context link to each and every part in it, may it be tree, stone, person, light, sound or any conceivable characteristic.

Now the question arises whether comparison of  perception memory with video snapshot is valid?

Chemistry of Dream

Dream is the perception in sub consciousness. There is no external stimuli from sense organs. Still person perceives various interconnected events creating a continuous real life experience  in dream.

Many theories are postulated to decipher the meaning of dream and linking it to psychological state of person or as indicator of future events. But to my mind, dream is nothing but manifestation of chemical reactions in the brain.

Development in  of organic chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology and bioinformatics have given us new tools for investigating the mechanism of memory management is brain.

We know that our brain has a large storage capacity for storing  all our experience. It could be compared with  unlimited memory storage capacity provided by cloud storage architecture. To extend this comparison,  the data might be getting stored in Big Table with many scattered  tablets or in the form of no sql database with flexible structure  with small chunks  of related information packets ( like small video clips with multimedia features).  Each of these memory  packets have context links related to persons, location or time for creating meaningful  streaming data through recombination.

Comparison of cloud storage to memory storage in brain seems logical.  Because
due to early neurological work of Karl Lashley and Wilder Penfield in the 1950s and 1960s, it has become clear that long-term memories are not stored in just one part of the brain, but are widely distributed throughout the cortex. After consolidation, long-term memories are stored throughout the brain as groups of neurons that are primed to fire together in the same pattern that created the original experience
( Ref : http://www.human-memory.net/processes_storage.html)

Human brain is composed of organic compounds and dynamic memory also must be in the form of numerous  large molecular weight organic compounds.  We know that  starch, cellulose, proteins and fats ( main constituents of organic matter) are nothing but large interconnected simple organic compounds like aldehydes, ketones, sugars and amino acids. Even the DNA and RNA in the cell nucleus are long spiral chains of nucleic acids carrying specific sequences of amino acid residues representing some characteristics.
In genetic engineering,  molecular cloning is used for producing recombinant DNA . The procedure allows random selection and recombination of different parts of DNA fragments. The DNA to be cloned is obtained from an organism of interest, then treated with enzymes in the test tube to generate smaller DNA fragments.
Subsequently, these fragments are then combined with vector DNA to generate recombinant DNA molecules.

Now suppose our experience is stored in brain as small fragments of organic molecules like DNA fragments in a small pool of memory storage where all fragments are freely moving  like Brownian motion and each fragment has some context specific links there can be recombination of experience in dream sequence based on random joining of such links. As the string grows, it attains intelligence which prompts and prefers combination of typical memory package which is in tune with previous  scene.

Memory storage mechanism in brain can be compared with chemical coagulation, flocculation and precipitation  processes. With time, memory goes on accumulating. This memory if considered as a large cluster of organic molecules, they will conglomerate to form flocs and get settled or adsorbed on surfaces in for of layers, the older memories in deeper layers will still have some context links accessible to intentional probing.
Precipitation

This is the reason why in dream also we expect occurrence of some person or  situation and in a moment it gets materialized changing the story giving false impression of consciousness in our mind. Still we feel that some thing is missing or some where there is darkness or fear or there is memory gap.  This may be  due to vague knowledge of earlier correct sequence  in actual life experience stored somewhere at other location. (like job tracker in Hadoop programming)  Failure in matching new sequence with original disrupts our sleep.

Many events in dream  match our previous experience and are associated with some alerts and alarms. Similarly as the sequence of memory packets is due to uncontrolled selection, we  feel unsecured  in dream with sudden change of situations.  The dreams in school days often relate examination  event  where we fail to reach in time, forget something or do not remember the answers creating anxiety.  Elder persons have dreams related to their work where they spend most of their time or crises in personal relations. Devotees do experience appearance of their favorite gods or saints in dream due to large storage of previous memory packets composed of visuals and stories related to them.

Dream can also be interpreted to be a stress reliever mechanism where many memory packets orient themselves in some pattern during storage compression, which triggers popping up of some old memories creating false but meaningful sequence.

Any experience of real life is perceived by person through process of perception. This perception is stored as some cluster of organic molecules which is retained in the brain and used for understanding meaning of new perceptions. Recalling memory during conscious state does not create any confusion but during dream such recall is unintentional and hence results in dream with synthesized unpredictable sequence.

These are some thoughts on possible role of previous experience in dream generation. But one thing is certain that its sole dependence on existing memory storage rules out forcasting capabilities of dream.

Research in exploring mechanisms in memory storage and dream generation will help in eliminating false dogma associated with dreams as indicators of future events.
