Root out Corruption, not the Tree

India is passing throuh a very critical stage with exposure of corruption charges against Government Officers, Political Leaders and big Corporates. Media and opposition parties are busy in cashing on the situation and stalling the Government machinery, stopping the projects and demanding destruction of illegal projects. General public is rejoicing the stories and fight between the political parties and has started doubting each and every project and development work as the handiwork of people and officers with corrupt motive. This is most dangerous situation and may hamper the development of India irrevokably. Some essential projects like Nuclear plant are also facing opposition from many quarters.

No doubt, corruption needs to be rooted out and the corrupt people should be brought to book, but we should be careful to see that the government, economy and development work needed for India's growth and prosperity do not get badly affected. Removal of corruption disease should be done with expert sergery with no harm to patient. We have read the story in childhood that a fool appointed to safeguard the king uses sword to kill the fly on the nose of king. Even though the tree is infested with termites, cutting the tree completely is not the solution.

What is needed is careful and prolonged treatment allowing time and resources to replenish the damaged system with new healthy alternatives and evolving a system to prevent further occurance of such disease. Cancer treatment is best example. In this case radiation dose and medicine is given in such proportion that rapidly multiplying cells are killed. There is temporary losss of some heathy cells also but the system is capable of rejevunation.

All political parties should come together, think and devise an effective methodology to deal with corruption charges, keep secrecy where needed, keep monitoring its impact on growth and development projects, should prevent action which could harm the interests, credibility and strength of our country in international scenario.

Infra-structural developments, if done illegaly and through corrupt practises should be utilised for essential activities like defence, research institutes, education or health services instead of destroying them. Agencies which warn and expose irregularities and corruption should be strengthened by government funding to keep them away from foreign interests. Their role is essential as preventive medicine and should not be considered as unwanted and troublemaking activity.

Environmental preservation is crucial for India. But there is lot of ignorance about its importance in industrialists, project planners and technocrats. Laws for environmental protection in India are sufficiently strong but tendency to violate them has become normal practice. Project consultants generally ignore or give cosmetic importance to this requirement. Financial provisions for rehabilitation and environmental protection are considered as burden and are managed instead of taken care for.

Projects get stuck with opposition from NGOs and affected people and the blame goes to the advisors and pollution control authorities more than the offenders. The damage once done to environment cannot be undone by destroying the project. It would add to national loss, environmental loss, economical disaster for small investers and unemployment. Remedy in such case would be the punishment in the form of compensatory environmental upgradation of some other area which needs financial resources. This would enable government to conserve environment on national scale if not at local level and would get infra-structures at no cost for essential non polluting activities.
